This Thanksgiving break, the Hildreth Institute led it’s first social awareness digital campaign — calling on activists, students, and alumni to draw attention to the lasting financial ramifications of assuming student loans. Through hundreds of conversations with students and alumni this year, we have found that the American culture has suppressed students’ willingness to discuss their student loan stories, deeming it embarrassing and uncomfortable.

With our ongoing Instagram #mydebt_hasaname story share, and through punctual campaigns like this one, we hope to change this narrative and empower student borrowers to share their stories, as this is not an individual problem, but a collective one.

Read on for some of our allies’ and students’ stories below, as they sarcastically gave #ThanksFortheDebt.
