Our campus team worked very hard during the month of July, continuing to help us advance our #ZeroDebt efforts. They are laying the groundwork for our movement by collecting petitions and pledges, spreading our message on their campuses, and helping share the stories of those affected by student debt.

This month our team spent some time working side by side and coming together for our protest of the UMASS tuition increases as well as a day of petition signatures collection on the Boston Common (see pictures below). These hands-on experiences are not only spreading the message of HI, but giving our campus organizers the skills they will need to succeed on their campuses this fall.

During our protest of the UMASS tuition increases, students were interviewed by the press giving a much needed student voice to student debt related news. The Boston Globe quoted Jordan Leedberg, a rising junior at UMass Lowell who said “I think people think there isn’t anything they can do” about student loans, “People see it as a necessary evil.” The Bay State Banner quoted Ignacio Fletcher saying “Education is a right! And [it’s] one no student should have to fight loans for.” Having the voices of students at the forefront is critical, and these campus leaders are doing a great job of speaking for their fellow students.
