Hildreth Institute Celebrates Passage of Fair Share Amendment
Constitutional Amendment Will Generate $2 Billion Annually for Public Education and Transportation
BOSTON – The Hildreth Institute, a nonprofit research and policy center dedicated to restoring the promise of higher education as an engine of upward mobility for all, released the following statement from Managing Director Bahar Akman Imboden in response to the passage of the Fair Share Amendment, which creates a fairer tax system in Massachusetts and will generate critical new revenue to invest in transportation and public education:
"Chronic disinvestment in our public colleges and universities over the past two decades has made public higher education no longer an option for too many students and families. Rapidly rising tuition rates and cuts to financial aid have forced students to choose between taking out substantial loans to cover costs or abandon their dreams of higher education altogether.“ The Fair Share Amendment provides Massachusetts with a unique opportunity to reverse this trend. With billions of dollars in new revenue dedicated to transportation and public education, Massachusetts can begin to build a public higher education system that invests in students and their futures.“ The Hildreth Institute is proud to be part of the Raise Up Massachusetts coalition that pushed hard to pass this historic constitutional amendment, and we congratulate our coalition partners on this incredible victory which has the power to change the trajectory for countless students and families across Massachusetts."

The Hildreth Institute is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to restoring the promise of higher education as an engine of upward mobility for all. We believe that all students should be able to obtain a high-quality, zero-debt postsecondary education. At Hildreth Institute, we fight for zero-debt college because we believe that student loans are not the right financial aid tool for our students or their families. We need to move to a zero-debt system that makes high-quality college affordable to all, without leaving students mired in debt.
